UTM PRIME CATTLE

Auctioneer – Andrew Body

The largest entry of prime cattle for a few months met an improved trade with averages up 10p/kg for both steers and heifers. Given the number forward trade remained firm throughout.

Limousin crosses from Messrs. W.T. Bryant & Sons of Mawgan sold to a premium of 195p/kg and £1,346 for a big 690kg steer bought by Dales Family Butchers of Helston; with a further steer from Messrs. Bryant realising 194p/kg to David Wilton of Peter Morris Butchers, St. Columb.

Premium heifer from Messrs. R.H. & C.D. Care of St. Buryan being a Limousin x and realising 188p/kg to David Ellis of Lelant; a grand 708kg South Devon x heifer stood top value at £1,239 for Mr. R.H. Eddy of Tehidy and bought by Trevarthens of Roskrow.

A better number of cull cows this week but a greater proportion of straight out of the parlour types which affected the overall averages. Well-covered cows selling to a continued firm trade with a premium of 136p/kg for a 751kg Limousin x for Messrs. W.T. Bryant & Sons of Mawgan realising £1,021 to Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh.

A big Swedish Red & White x cow weighing 823kg from Messrs. P.J. Grylls & Son of Kenwyn topped the dairy sorts at 126p/kg and (£1,037); with a pair of Friesians at 125p/kg for Messrs. B.L. Hearn & Partners of Whitecross and Messrs. W. Marsh & Son of St. Stephen, all bought by Dawn West Devon.

Dearest of day at £1,135 was another huge Friesian from Messrs. B.L. Hearn & Partners of Whitecross weighing 946kg, again bought by Dawn West Devon.

A better entry than in recent weeks and some more forward cattle on offer which met a strong trade and plenty of demand from around the ring.

Topping the day at £1,050 were a trio of steers from a run of older Limousin x cattle for Messrs. M.D. Curtis & Son of Gunwalloe; with their heifers to £875.

Of the younger sorts, a 15-16 month old Charolais/Stabiliser x steer pair from an entry for Messrs.G.S. Skinner & Son of St. Ervan realised £860; and bunch of four Limousin x heifers 15 months old for Messrs. R.G. & J.M. Prowse of St. Allen reached £685.
