Helstonbury 2019 is well underway as the popular music festival gears up for a Saturday evening of music.

This year’s event kicked off on Thursday with Helstonbury Does Jazz, featuring Helston School Jazz Orchestra, before getting full up and running last night with three stages, including the Helstonbury Introduced Stage featuring performers all under 18.

Today there are four stages in action: the Helstonbury Introduced Stage showcasing festival-grown performers past and present; the Acoustic Stage and the Cannon Stage where the last acts will begin at 9pm; and the Al Rideout Stage in memory of the joint festival organiser who died last year, where funk band Shabby Chic perform at 6pm, Cornish favourites High Voltage begin at 8pm and Queen tribute band Good Old Fashioned Lover Boys begin the last set of the night at 10pm.

Three of the stages are back running again tomorrow, also joined by the a capella stage in the front bar.

The fourth and final day gets underway with the Helstonbury Sunday Service at 11am, which has become an essential part of the event for many festival goers.

Featuring HMS Seahawk Military Band and Culdrose Military Wives Choir, the service will be led by RNAS Culdrose chaplain Rev Janice Honey-Morgan, for which the encouraged dress code is summer frock and flowers for the ladies and hat and tie for the men.

Waste will be reduced by providing reusable, branded cups upon entry, alongside recyclable wristbands.

Additionally, this year’s Helstonbury t-shirts will comprise of 100 per cent organic cotton and water-based inks, and biodegradable glitter will be provided by Wild Glitter.

Since it was created by Paul Turton in 2001, to raise money for an electric wheelchair for Elizabeth Gwilliam, Helstonbury has continually flourished and now supports various causes benefitting the local community.
