The first session of a new market for Helston will be in the town centre in just over a fortnight.

Taking place at Monument Walk, on the recently renovated area next to the Grylls Monument, it will launch on Thursday, April 11 and run from 10am and 2pm.

To begin with the markets will run monthly, on the second Thursday of each month - although at the last meeting of the town council, members Mike Thomas and John Boase wanted to see the markets held weekly.

Mr Thomas said: "I'm not sure if it will have any clout unless it's a regular market. That would give you the chance to have different stalls."

Mr Boase agreed: "From Easter through to September we should be looking at at least a weekly market. People need to know when."

Projects officer Martin Searle, who is overseeing the setting up of the market, said when consulting with interested traders the feedback had been that they attended other events and would not always be available on a weekly basis, although he added: "We have always had the aspiration that if it was successful it could be more frequent."

At the suggestion of councillor Ron Edgcumbe, it was agreed that stallholders should be able trade at the first two events without paying fees, to "start a momentum."

Members were , however, mindful of the need to maintain a level of quality and a variety of stalls.

As such, it was agreed that town clerk Chris Dawson and Mr Searle would be given responsibility after the first two markets to set the regularity of them and also the fees charged.

It has been proposed to charge charity and non-profit stalls £10, other non-food stalls £15 and food stalls £25 a session, inclusive of VAT, with a ten per cent discount for advance bookings of three consecutive markets. These figures are on a par with the monthly Helston Farmers' Market at the Old Cattle Market.

There is space for nine gazebos in the area next to the bowling club, with the potential for a few extra to the left of the monument.
