After 30 years in the same shop in Camborne, Xanadu has moved into larger premises on the opposite side of the High Street.

Selling clothes, body jewellery, coloured hair dyes and mystical accoutrements associated with New Age living, Xanadu’s owner Jackie Howells has taken on more space to keep up with customer demand.

“I absolutely loved the old shop at 46 Trelowarren Street, but it had become quite cramped with all the stock I hold,” she says.

“We’re now in number 61, which is feeling much lighter and airier in comparison. Since opening a week ago, I’m already selling more – probably because my customers can properly see what they are buying!”

A major development also seems likely to follow the move. “I’m seriously considering getting a card machine,” laughs Jackie.

“Up until now, transactions have tended to be on the smaller side and customers have been happy to go to a nearby cash machine if they haven’t got enough change. With more people buying clothes, though, I may have to upgrade!”

To celebrate Xanadu’s 30th anniversary and opening the new premises, Jackie is holding a special open day on Saturday, March 30. There will be cake, nibbles, something to drink, stilt walkers, face painting and taster reflexology sessions.

“I’ve loved every minute of trading in Camborne because it’s full of real people who are genuinely friendly,” she says. “Thirty years is a good excuse for a bit of a party.”

BID Camborne manager Anna Pascoe said Xanadu’s enduring success was down to Jackie’s continuing enthusiasm, hard work and passion for the town.

“She is a great ‘Cambassador’ – someone who is proud to be part of the community, knows her business inside out and really plays her part in making our high street a vibrant place to be.”
