Sharp skills earn butcher third industry title plus help for smallholder shops

A Lancashire butcher’s sharp skills helped earn him a prestigious industry award for the third year running.

Steve Perrins, of Taylor’s Farm Shop, Lathom, Lancashire, completed a hat-trick of titles by winning this year’s EBLEX farm shop beef butchery competition.

The competition formed part of BeefExpo, at Malvern’s Three Counties Showground, and saw eight butchers at the top of their game show off their skills. Each spent an hour preparing and displaying produce to impress the judges and visitors who attended the event.

Michael Richardson, EBLEX direct selling programme manager, said: “The standard of the competition gets better and better each year and it was incredibly difficult to decide on the winner from a very strong field of competitors.

“At the end of the day, however, there can only be one winner. Steve demonstrated high quality butchery skills to produce a wide range of cuts to maximise overall consumer appeal which was fantastic.”

EBLEX’s direct selling programme provides information, advice and practical meetings for businesses involved in direct meat sales. It covers farm shops, farmers markets and box schemes and focuses on meat quality and profitability.
