This month’s breeder focus is about a gentleman called Dave Hackett who has given his life to the poultry fancy in so many different ways, his work and dedication has given help and advice to so many people over a very long period of time.
David has continued a long family history that has been heavily involved with keeping and breeding chickens over many decades.
David has been involved in poultry from 14 years of age. The interest in the hobby was passed on from his granddad who was an avid poultry and pigeon keeper. To follow in the family tradition he acquired a trio of duckwing bantams and these birds were the beginning of a life long involvement with poultry and especially the game bird.
In 1948 the family had to move and this created a situation were a decision had to be made between keeping poultry or pigeons- the result was to keep the poultry and has been kept in the family right until present day.
David was his granddad’s right hand and spent many hours tending the birds at any given opportunity until granddad unfortunately began to loose his sight.
At this point David took over the birds and set about building new pens with the help of his uncle which were to accommodate all the birds in one location. They are still kept there today.
