The National Farmers Union is inviting "seasonal" turkey producer to contribute to its survey of the market. The NFU us seeking to build a picture of the market in terms of cost of production, sales and pricing. Survey results are presented at the autumn NFU Turkey Marketing Meetings, which are free to attend and open to all seasonal producers.

The European Commission has announced that it is taking Greece and Italy to the European Union Court of Justice over their failure to implement the Welfare of Laying Hens Directive, which came into force across the EU in January 2012.

Tesco has dropped its 11-year commitment not to sell poultry reared on genetically modified feed. The original controls were put in place to reflect the concerns of shoppers, who question the impact of GM crops on human health and the countryside.

Anti GM campaigners are urging supermarkets not to loosen their rules on poultry feed. The move, led by the Soil Association and Friends of the Earth, follows calls from the poultry industry to allow egg producers to use genetically-modified feed on the grounds that non-GM feed is becoming too expensive.

From 1st January 3013 the new surveillance for Bovine TB was introduced in a bid to stop the spread of the disease from the West Country. The previous testing was undertaken on a parish basis but under the new regime testing will be undertaken on a county wide basis.

DECIDING on which breed of turkey to buy can be difficult as there are more than people generally realise. The Norfolk Black, the oldest breed originating in the UK, should be coal black all over, with no hint of other colour in the feathering.

A decision by Morrisons to move away from stocking 100 per cent British poultry meat is “extremely disappointing” for the industry, the NFU said today. It is understood that the supermarket chain is importing poultry meat from within Europe and marketing it under Morrisons’ exclusive tertiary brands Helmsley’s and Market Value.

New legislation intended to protect the welfare of animals at the time of their killing comes into effect on 1 January 2013. The Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) has produced an information leaflet which summarises the key principles of the new legislation and the implications for producers killing poultry on-farm for commercial purposes (to supply meat either to the final consumer directly or to retailers).

This has halted production of this particular finished feed at Marriage's, although licensed retailers may still hold some remaining stock in local stores. My two year old hybrid layers are still producing three eggs between five of them on a daily basis (and more at the beginning of the year) which I find quite a decent amount. But I have noticed this drops down on the days I have to keep them confined to their (quite spacious) run.

Manchester-based enriched colony cage egg producer Duncan Priestner has been elected the new chairman of the NFU’s poultry board. Elections took place at NFU’s headquarters in Stoneleigh today and also saw Cheshire farmer Mike Bailey re-elected as vice chairman for turkeys.

The publication of the RBST Watchlist for 2012 has seen the completion of the UK Poultry Breeds at Risk list with the inclusion of turkeys, ducks and geese. This is the first time that the charity has been able to recognise native breeds of turkey and waterfowl and their inclusion on the ‘at risk’ list means that they have the opportunity to benefit from RBST’s valuable conservation work.
