Devon show opens

Upwards of 90,000 people are expected to visit the Devon County Show over the next three days. But visitors to the Westpoint, Exeter, showground will find fewer cattle on show due mostly to movement restrictions in place because of TB.

The event which opened this morning, is the largest agricultural show in the county calendar and acts as a showcase for Devon's food and farming industry.

Show secretary Ollie Allen said the event offered a chance for youngsters to learn more about the countryside.

advertisement"The Year of Food and Farming is an exciting and high profile campaign to help our young people find out more about where their food comes from through first-hand experiences," she said.

Among the visitors today will be the Duchess of Cornwall, this year's Devon County Show president. On Friday her food writer son, Tom Parker Bowles, will judge the show's spring sausage competition.

There is much at the show for smallholders not only in the competitions but in the numerous trade stands.
