New home for tired chickens
A hotel in Truro, Cornwall, moved by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's Chicken Out campaign and publicised in Smallholder, is offering a new lease of life to 24 ex-battery hens.
The Alverton Manor Hotel was spurred into action following the chef's popular Channel 4 show, Hugh's Chicken Run, which took a close look at intensive poultry farming.
Zoe McEwen, the Alverton's conference manager, said: "The TV programme showed some distressing scenes. We already advocate the use of free range chicken and eggs and buy local whenever we can. But after seeing Hugh's show we were eager to do more."
The 24 bald and unkempt ex-battery hens now have a free-range life enjoying the Alverton's garden.
"Everyone here at the hotel loves the chickens, they all have their own quirky characteristics and they are great fun to watch," added Zoe.
"When I first brought them to the Alverton they were very quiet and lifeless, but they are getting more confident and looking healthier as each day goes by.
"I'm glad we've been able to offer our new feathery residents a second chance."

Thank you to the Alverton Hotel for giving the chickens a spacious retirement home. I have done a lot of voluntary work looking after chickens and am constantly amazed by their grit and determination and of course their individuality. I hope many of the guests at the hotel will get a chance to see chickens as more than just a food source. Thanks again! Sheila[italic]italic[/italic]
