Blue tongue meeting for Cornish breeders
The National Sheep Association and the Livestock Auctioneers Association have joined forces to organise a Bluetongue Information Evening in Cornwall on Wednesday March 5.
The event - supported by NFU, will be held at Lakeview Country Club Lanivet just off the A30 and will commence at 7.30pm. All are welcome and the evening is designed to give farmers in Cornwall and surrounding areas an insight into bluetongue as a disease and also the plans that are being developed to try and offset its effects in Great Britain.
Speakers will include Peter Morris the Chief Executive of National Sheep Association who is also a member of the Industry/Defra Core Group on Bluetongue. As well as presentations there will be ample time for a question and answer session on the disease as part of the evening.
The timing of the meeting is very apt as it has coincided with the recent news that Cornwall has become part of the England Bluetongue Surveillance Zone as a result of the latest confirmed case in Dorset. With confirmed cases of the disease now in the South West and spring approaching the need for farmers to be aware and informed about bluetongue and what it might mean is greater than ever.
Local Auctioneer and Chairman of the Livestock Auctioneers Association Ben Messer-Bennetts who will act as Chairman on the evening said: "Bluetongue threatens to be the worst disease to hit the UK livestock sector yet- it is potentially more devastating than either FMD or Bovine TB. It is vital that all farmers who have livestock are aware of what is going on with this disease and understand what they need to do if they are to have a chance of avoiding its effects. At times like this it is vital that all organisations involved in the livestock sector work together to give farmers the information they need. LAA is delighted to be working with the NSA and others to do this in Cornwall and throughout the rest of the country and we would all urge all Cornish livestock farmers to attend this evening meeting if they possibly can."
Anyone wishing to attend this very important meeting should contact the National Sheep Association on 01684 892 661
