Smallholder and Garden Festival
Pentathlon competition for Royal Welsh Smallholder and Garden Festival

A new pentathlon competition, with a £100 prize for the winner, to promote and develop smallholder-countryside skills, is being introduced at this year's Royal Welsh Smallholder and Garden Festival in May.

The competition, open to anyone over the age of 16, will challenge entrants to demonstrate their abilities in competing in five different tasks relating to smallholding. Details of what the tasks are, however, will not be disclosed beforehand, but those who take part will need to be prepared to undertake a variety of activities such as identifying items displayed to them, driving an ATV and completing practical countryside skills under guidance.

The new competition will take place on the second day of the Festival - Sunday May 18 - beginning at 9.00am. The entry fee is £10 per competitor and a one-day entry ticket to the event will be sent to each entrant nearer the date of the Festival together with general details and a list of starting times.

Those wishing to compete in the pentathlon should contact the RWAS for entry forms now because entries close on April 4.

The winner of the competition, which is sponsored by Arctic Cat UK Ltd, will receive a prize of £100 and a piece of Welsh Royal Crystal, kindly given by Mr Emrys Bowen. A cheque for £50 will go to the runner-up and cash prizes will be awarded to the third, fourth and fifth placed competitors.

The Smallholder and Garden Festival attracted a record attendance in 2007 of 25,558. This year's event takes place on the Royal Welsh Showground, Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, on May 17-18.
