UK FARMLAND prices surged at the fastest pace in the RICS' rural market survey's history during the first half of 2008 but lifestyle buyers retreated as the credit crunch deepened.

IT has been widely reported that the residential property market is experiencing a slowdown in the number of transactions, together with a readjustment in prices from the levels reached during 2007. At the same time the farm land market remains buoyant, with demand for farms and land with larger acreages strengthening further on the back of shortage of supply and increasing commodity prices.

SPRING is in the air and Rural Scene report that already the market in Wales is beginning to wake up. While there has been much talk of gloom and doom in the press, in the real world there is still a good demand for properties with land which, historically, has always held its value much better in troubled times than purely residential property.

THE first mountain I ever climbed was Stac Pollaidh in the Highlands of Scotland. From the summit the view is breathtaking in all directions. To the west the sun sets in a fiery golden glow over the Summer Isles and in the distance the Outer Hebrides lie silhouetted on the horizon.

IN this country, we have a tradition of wanting to own our own property. This is not always possible for several reasons the main one usually being financial. A large proportion of the population rent their homes so what about renting a smallholding?
