Farmers and growers who are interested in using quality compost for growing vegetable and salad crops have a wealth of information at their fingertips, thanks to a new guide published by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme).
The online booklet, which is entitled ‘Using Quality Compost to Benefit Vegetable and Salad Crops’, covers everything from the key benefits of using compost made from biodegradable material, such as garden prunings, to advice on its application.
It also highlights the results of WRAP-sponsored trials on the use of compost, and explains how to find local composters who manufacture quality compost which meets the requirements of BSI PAS 100 and the Quality Protocol for Compost.
David Tompkins, Project Manager for WRAP’s Organics Programme, said: “The agricultural market for compost is growing rapidly as more and more farmers are recognising its value as a soil improver and cost-effective supplement, or alternative to artificial fertilisers.
“This booklet provides a clear and concise guide for farmers and growers who are considering using quality compost and provides sources of further information. We hope it will encourage even more farmers to consider using this sustainable and locally available product.”
