A new way of selling poultry
1:24pm Friday 21st September 2012 in News
Fiona Whittle of Hey Little Hen became disillusioned when she saw her precious birds going under the hammer at livestock auctions for a fraction of their real value. The cost, stress on the birds, and the risk of spreading disease all troubled her.
So she has set up a series of regular poultry fairs in her area, to see if other backyard keepers would like to get together each week to sell their birds and eggs to the general public.
She has broadened the event, to include local fresh produce, home-made foods, plants, crafts, equestrian equipment and more - in fact anything with a "rural" and "outdoor" theme.
Events take place every Saturday lunchtime, usually adjacent to a local pub. This weekend, the 22nd September, it is at The Wheatsheaf Inn, Fromes Hill, Ledbury, HR8 1HT, and next weekend, the 29th September, it is at The Trumpet Inn, Trumpet, Ledbury, HR8 2RA. A small charge is made to sellers, to cover administration costs, and the events take place under DEFRA regulations.
