Kennel Club call for responses to compulsory microchipping of dogs
12:25pm Tuesday 24th July 2012 in News
The Kennel Club has submitted its formal response to the Welsh government’s consultation on compulsory microchipping of dogs, and is calling for all interested parties and individuals to do the same to help determine the future of microchipping legislation in Wales.
The Welsh government is considering introducing legislation under Section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, that would require all owners to have their dogs microchipped and details recorded on a database. The Welsh government’s key proposal is to have all puppies and dogs kept by licensed breeders to be microchipped.
Kennel Club Communications Director, Caroline Kisko commented: “We are pleased that the Welsh government is considering introducing legislation that will be fundamental in helping to promote responsible dog ownership and reunite lost dogs with their owners.
“The Kennel Club has been lobbying on introducing compulsory microchipping for many years and received great cross party support for its annual National Microchipping Month event in Cardiff last month. Microchipping has a wide range of benefits for all involved, most importantly reuniting lost or stolen dogs with their owners, but also in terms of overall cost savings to local authorities in the kennelling of strays. To this end we commend the Welsh Government for once again showing its commitment to animal welfare and hope that others will respond to the consultation showing their support for compulsory microchipping too.”
The deadline for the Welsh government’s consultation on compulsory microchipping of dogs is August 8th 2012. To respond go to: http://wales.gov.uk/consultations/environmentandcountryside/120516microchippingdogs/?lang=en.
