Smallholders wage war on slugs and snails
4:51pm Thursday 5th July 2012 in News
Q Slugs and snails like my young plants more than I do. I absolutely refuse to use slug pellets as I want the birds to be able to be able to find some slugs and snails for feed. But I do have to try and protect my young plants. What do readers suggest?
Our experts have a few ideas to kick start the discussion on slug and snail control but we’d love to hear from you at liz.wright@smallholder.co.uk or facebook your experiences!
• Copper rings are excellent round young plants but egg shells are also effective • Go out at night with a torch and remove the offenders and either kill them (squash) or put them somewhere handy for the birds the following day such as in the hedgerows • Companion planting is said to help to discourage our slimy friends.
A new edition of the Smallholder magazine has been released. It has a competition to win natural slug control!
