'Unique' chance to learn countryside skills
11:50am Monday 11th June 2012 in News
Six people are being given the rare opportunity to train in outdoor practical countryside management work and gain academic qualifications at the same time, while being part of the national park’s apprentice team.
The jobs are based at Threlkeld, near Keswick, and interested applicants have until Monday 2 July to express an interest – a two-stage interview process, including a practical assessment day will follow throughout the month.
The scheme, which will run for a fixed 18-month term, is part of a Heritage Lottery Fund project, called Fell Futures. Other partner organisations include the National Trust, the Environment Agency, the Forestry Commission and United Utilities. The professional qualifications will come through Newton Rigg College.
LDNPA Lead Field Ranger Angus Titterington, said he would like to hear from anyone interested in outdoor work and who feels the positions might suit them.
Angus believes the level of accredited training and the breadth is unique and is not available anywhere else in the country. It will be provided by the LDNPA and its partners. In addition to tuition in skills such as chainsaws, hedge laying and quad bikes apprentices will also learn about: bridge building and repair; heather burning; wildfire fighting; river corridor management; and 4 X 4 driving.
“This is a great opportunity to participate in and gain experience of practical work for the national park. People will be expected to carry out hard physical work in remote locations and in all weathers.
“Applicants will also need to be able to work as part of a team and some knowledge and awareness of Health and Safety issues would also help,” he added.
Anyone wanting an informal chat about the scheme can contact Angus on 01768 871401 or 07740 419198. More details and an application form are available on www.lakedistrict.gov.uk in the ‘about us’ jobs section or by emailing the Human Resources Team at firstname.lastname@example.org
