Plans for a national smallholders’ show for Scotland

A group of Scottish smallholders, who met via the forums of the smallholding website, www.accidentalsmallholder.net, are planning to hold a national smallholders’ show for Scotland in autumn 2012.

The group, inspired by the RWAS’s Smallholder and Garden Festival, is holding an open meeting at 7.30pm on Thursday 30th June in the Mayfield Centre, Stirling, FK87 0DB to which individuals, or representatives of organisations with links to the smallholding community, who would like to support the proposed event are invited.

At the meeting, the group will be formally establishing the Scottish Smallholders’ Show Society, which will be the body responsible for the show’s organisation. A committee will be elected and the real work will begin. The Society will be seeking to raise initial funds from memberships and from community grants, although in the longer term, it is hoped that the event will be self-financing.

Karen McKay, of Yonderton Rare Breed Pigs, is looking after the fledgling society’s communications. Karen said, “Folk interested in the show can follow the Society’s progress now on Facebook and soon, the SSSS website will be up and running.”

Aimed at both existing and aspiring smallholders, the show will have trade stands, showing classes, seminars and demonstrations relevant to the small farmer, grower and those seeking a more independent lifestyle.

“We decided there was no point waiting for someone else to get this show on the road”, said Rosemary Champion, owner of The Accidental Smallholder, “We’re hoping to put on an event that will be supportive of smallholders, with opportunities for learning, fun and that camaraderie that is so much a part of smallholding.”

If you are interested in lending support by joining the SSS Society or by supporting it in other ways, please contact Karen on kkjmckay@aol.co.uk or Rosemary on rosemary@accidentalsmallholder.net
