There was a busy start to Saturday morning at the RWAS Smallholder and Garden Festival as people came in numbers to visit the first day of a packed weekend.

The auction of vintage memorabilia is on the Saturday and collectors will gather to look before buying from 11am,. On offer will be vintage machinery, engines, implements and literature.

All the livestock, pigs, sheep, cattle, angora goats, dairy goats and pygmy goats are in place, clean and at their best, ready for the judging which will take place throughout the day.

Also on the Saturday is the poultry Show which is organised by the Welsh Federation of poultry Clubs and this year it has the status of Poultry Club Voucher Show which is a great for a show only in its second year.

This morning the Poultry show is being judged and after lunch, the results will be on show with prize cards and rosettes pinned to the pens. I can’t wait to see who wins the prestigious Best in Show Award.

I’m off now to go and discover a greener way to live at the innovative Green Horizons (Eco) Exhibition which is on for both days of the festival.

I’m especially keen to see the eco-garden which has been built especially for the show and will look at composting, alternative energy for heating and lighting, the very topical (especially where I live in the dry Eastern Counties) conserving and re-using water and the greenhouse built from recycled plastic bottles.

I shall be on the Smallholder Stand at points during the day but otherwise will be meeting friends old and new through out the show.

Tomorrow is the auction of live poultry and poultry equipment and collectibles. Don’t forget there is a full programme of FREE talks on both days – details on this website.

There’s also a Championship Dog Show on both days and a Folk Dance Festival plus lots of lovely local food and drink to taste and buy in the Farmers’ Markets of Wales area.

Don't worry if you just cannot make it to the showground today, tomorrow is just as jam packed with events, talks and excitement.

Admission to the Festival at the showground at Builtyh Wells in Wales costs just £10 for adults and £5 for children aged 5-16 years. Children under 5 years are admitted free. A family one-day ticket costs £25 and weekend caravanning and camping costs £35 per pitch.

Prices include VAT and car parking is free. A mini bus service will operate between Builth Road Station and the showground for those travelling to the Festival by train and a wheelchair hire service will also be available at Llanelwedd.
