European Bat Weekend is here with wildlife enthusiasts and the general public alike gathering at batty events www.bats.org.uk/events across the UK on bank holiday weekend 28th- 29th August.
European Bat Weekend is a celebration of bats coordinated in the UK by the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) each year, giving thousands of people across the country the chance to see and hear bats in their natural environment. Bat walks, illustrated talks, children's workshops and demonstrations and more have been organised by local bat groups, Wildlife Trusts, countryside rangers and others across the country, including bat walks in Buckinghamshire, bat box building in Scotland and bat crafts, talks and a bat treasure hunt at the flagship event at the Natural History Museum, London.
Kit Stoner, Deputy Chief Executive of the BCT said: “European Bat Weekend is an ideal way for people to learn more bats, and to find out how they can help these truly amazing creatures. Bat walks are a unique experience and I would urge everyone to go out and see and hear bats in their natural environment, it is exhilarating!”
Any sightings of bats made over the weekend can be shared online at the Big Bat Map! This interactive map on the BCT website www.bats.org.uk/bigbatmap lets you record sightings of bats flying in your area, see where bats have been seen all near you and look for bat hotspots.
European Bat Weekend grew out of a European Bat Night – a European-wide celebration of bats held every August under the Eurobats Agreement.
