A company claims to have developed a water trough that is 'self cleaning.'
Aquamdias, which manufactures natural water treatments, claims is 250-litre Fresha Trough prevents algae and microbes from growing inside it.
The company puts this down to the trough being pre-treated with anti-microbial coating made up of silver and active metals.
It hopes this new technology will not only save time for busy farmers and smallholders, but will also reduce the numbers of illnesses occurring in field-based animals.
David Dunkling, director of Aquamidas and a former lecturer in science and technology, said that their previous tank, Fresha Tank, had been released some time ago, designed specifically for aquariums, but had become popular with equestrians.
However, it only killed microbes that came into contact with the pre-treated discs, not those that grew on the sides of the trough.
"Since then, we have experimented extensively and trialled our new Fresha Trough product, which we feel will fit with the particular needs of anyone caring for horses or livestock," he said.
