Is this a step forward to protecting livestock?

The Welsh Assembly Government has welcomed the announcement by the UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs that an injectable TB vaccine for badgers has been issued a licence.

This means that the Badger Vaccine Deployment Project in England can now go ahead to better understand the practicalities of using an injectable vaccine in the field.

Dr. Christianne Glossop, Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales said: "We are pleased that the Injectable Badger Vaccine has now received a licence. This means that we can see whether trapping and injecting badgers is practical to do.

"We will continue to work closely with Defra, and will monitor the progress of the Badger Deployment Project in England but it's still early days. Vaccination is also a preventative measure and will not protect badgers which are already infected and may continue to spread disease until they die.

"There is no one single solution to getting rid of bovine TB. I hope that vaccination will eventually become a useful tool in the eradication of TB."
