Pygmy Goats at the Smallholder and Garden Festival 2010 As in past years, there will be a full range of classes both in the breed and the pet section included in the show to be held on Saturday, May 15.

It will start at 10.30am with the breed classes followed by the pet and young handler classes, which will probably take us into the afternoon.

Later that day, Peter Mercer, the chair of the Pygmy Goat Club, will give a talk in Speaker’s Corner on the topic of Pygmy goats.

The Sunday will include two sessions in the show ring in the exhibition hall two where the Pygmies are located, one at 11am and again at 2.30am.

These will involve most of the Pygmy goats at the show being displayed in the ring and presented to illustrate differences in conformation, appropriate types for breeding, for pets and so on.

Throughout the weekend, exhibitors will be only too pleased to talk about Pygmy goat breeding and any aspect of management that the public might wish to discuss with them. Some could possibly have stock for sale.

Anyone looking to buy goats would be wise to take their time before committing themselves. Discuss with as many of the exhibitors as you can their views on every aspect of goat keeping and listen carefully to advice given before making up your mind.

What you need to be very sure about before buying anything is whether you want them purely as pets or for breeding purposes. If the latter, then spend time looking at what is on offer and do not be afraid to ask around for advice on pedigrees.

Good initial foundation stock can save years of frustration trying to ‘breed up’ from mediocre animals. If on the other hand you are interested in having them purely as pets then perhaps two wethers (castrated males) would better fit the bill.

If in doubt, walk away. Young stock always look appealing, but they will vary in quality, so make sure that you buy the best available.

This year look out for the Spring poultry Show at the Smallholder and Garden Festival After many years of successful poultry shows in the Autumn each year, the Poultry Club of Wales, in conjunction with the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society are to establish a Spring Show, to be held in Builth Wells on Saturday, May 15.

The show to be held at the annual festival will provide a wonderful opportunity for poultry enthusiasts and country dwellers to see a wide variety of breeds of poultry and waterfowl, all exhibited in the pink of condition.

The Poultry Club of Wales with its annual Welsh Federation Championship Show, now an established feature in the poultry show calendar are anxious to portray the hobby of poultry breeding and showing as an interesting and fascinating pastime for young and old alike.

A large attendance is anticipated at the fur and feather pavilion and everyone is welcome.
