Just as humans do, chickens’ health can be improved by harnessing nature.

Garlic has antifungal properties and is excellent at boosting the immune system. It also deters parasites which is why it is used by cat and dog owners to repel fleas. If a chicken is looking a little lacklustre a chopped and crushed clove of garlic can be added to water or it can be offered to the whole group.

Lavender is wonderful in nesting boxes not least because its’ scent relieves stress. In addition is increases blood circulation and acts as an insecticide. Simply scatter leaves and flowers in the boxes.

Apple cider vinegar is having a revival in popularity for its health benefits to humans but it is also good for minor respiratory problems in chickens. Its minerals support the immune system and the acid is a mild antiseptic and antibiotic. It must be given in its unpasteurised form which can be bought from poultry supply shops. Dilute 2% acid with 90% water.

Mint doesn’t just smell lovely, it repels rodents so leaves can be crushed and scattered through the nesting boxes.

Another excellent herb is oregano which has vitamins E and K, calcium and antioxidants. It supports the immune-system and respiratory health and is easily fed fresh or dried in feed.

Top of the list, though, is parsley which chickens adore. It contains vitamins A, B, C, E and K, as well as calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium and zinc. Mint helps blood-vessel development and it stimulates egg-laying so add dried mint to layer feed.
