Goose producers are reporting a strong demand with orders well up on this time last year.
“Goose sales are going well,” said John Franklin, chairman of British Goose Producers, who sells through his farm shop at Thorncote Green near Sandy in Bedfordshire and supplies local butchers.
“Demand is certainly ahead of last Christmas and consumers are looking for the larger sizes. If this trend continues into next week, we should have a sell-out for all producers across the country.
“We supply geese from 4 kg up to around 6.5 kg (8.8 to 14.3 lb) and a lot of the demand is for geese around the top weights.”
Norfolk Geese at Pulham Market, near Diss, is reporting a similar picture. Eddie Hegarty, partner in the business which is also the UK’s largest supplier of goslings, said that early sales were well up and they could be struggling to supply enough late orders.
