MEAT from the idyllic farm featured on BBC's Spring Watch is now available to the restaurant and hotel trade.

Fishleigh Estate in Devon sprang to life on the small screen again last month as the chosen location for the TV wildlife event. The Devon estate has been in the hands of the Sargent family since 1998 and it's their hard work that has turned it into such a trophy of the organic farming, wildlife conservation and animal welfare movements.

The Sargents and their team are true custodians of their land and farming is at the heart of their business: all the livestock you'll see living the good life on Fishleigh Estate is destined for the table, directly via the Sargent's Moorlands farm shop where a certified organic butcher prepares the meat to order.

"The organic meat we sell is mostly from our own farm, but we also source from accredited farms nearby. We vet all the farms and farmers and hand-pick the animals so we can guarantee absolute traceability and quality," says Gemma Sargent.

"Our customers can have total confidence in where their meat has come from and can relate to the conditions under which it has been produced."

Fishleigh Estate is home to a herd of pedigree Red Devon cattle and a mixed flock of sheep - mainly Dorset Cross and Suffolk. The animals are slowly reared in small herds on natural diets and it's this quality of life that ensures the meat is tender and flavoursome.

Quality of death is also important to the Sargents and the animals are sent to a small abattoir just five miles from the farm to minimise stress and to keep those all-important "food miles" down.

The meat is also now available to consumers who can order small, medium, large or "create your own" meat boxes. These contain a prime organic roasting joint, organic beef steaks, organic lean minced beef, award-winning free range pork sausages and dry-cured bacon, chops or steak and a seasonal surprise.
