The Mare and Foal Sanctuary’s Open Day wowed crowds thanks to super displays featuring many of their equine residents, from giant Kavaner the 17.1hh Shire to tiny Sir Didymus, the miniature Shetland pony.

The event took place on August 7 at the charity’s Visitor Centre near Totnes and was a day packed full of family activities, games and trade stands as well as staff surprising visitors with Royal-themed ridden demonstrations, quadrilles to music and even some llama agility.

More than 500 visitors attended the event and helped the Sanctuary to raise £2,324, which will go towards its continued work rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses in need.

Executive Director Simon Avery said: “Our annual Open Day gives people the perfect opportunity to see what we do first-hand and we were delighted that so many visitors came along. There was a lovely atmosphere, relaxed and very enjoyable. From our point of view it was a great success and all our staff worked so hard to show off their pride in our Sanctuary.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who came for helping us to raise so much money. We look forward to welcoming them all back soon, our Visitor Centre is open every day through to November and is completely free to visit.”
