A farming family from Llanbrynmair have established a Royal Welsh scholarship in memory of their daughter, Sara Louise Owen.

Louise was an accomplished wool handler and travelled widely across the globe. To preserve her legacy, the family have kindly created the £1,000 Louise Owen Memorial Scholarship to provide a junior shearer with the opportunity to develop and advance their skills in sheep shearing.

The scholarship will be awarded to the junior shearer in Wales showing greatest promise and will be used to help fund a trip to New Zealand in the autumn of 2015. The successful candidate will be given advanced training and will work with a pre-arranged shearing contractor. They will be presented with a certificate at the 2015 Royal Welsh Show and invited to write an article for the society's journal.

“We are truly thankful to the generosity of Louise’s family and welcome the opportunity for the most promising junior shearer in Wales to benefit from this incredible opportunity.” say’s Mr Estyn James, Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Chairman of Sheep Shearing.

“Wales’ shearers are amongst the best in the world and by encouraging our up and coming junior shearers to progress and get professional training we are only increasing their talents further.”

Further details of the scholarship and application forms can be obtained from: Llinos Samuel, Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, Powys, LD2 3SY (llinos@rwas.co.uk).

The closing date for applications is Monday September 1, 2014.
