Communities in Dorset and Oxfordshire are being urged to prepare for flooding as peak flows move along the rivers Thames, Dorset Stour and Frome. The Environment Agency says there is the possibility of significant flooding in the lower reaches of these rivers. Ongoing flooding is also expected on the Somerset Levels and rivers in the South East remain very high after recent rainfall.

River levels on the Severn will also remain high until Tuesday.

Update: At 1pm today (Monday) there were 108 flood warnings in place, concentrated mainly in the South East and South West. These warnings mean that flooding is expected and action should be taken.

There was also one severe flood warning, indicating a danger to life, affecting the rivers Stour and Avon near to Christchurch in Dorset. There were a further 208 flood alerts, with 92 of them in the South East alone.

High tides are now declining, however due to large waves and a storm surge there remains a coastal flood risk for much of the North West, South West and southern coasts of England and for parts of the Welsh coast. People are advised to stay away from promenades and jetties.

The Environment Agency’s Jonathan Day said: "The risk of river flooding continues into next week as peak flows move down the Thames, Dorset Stour and the Frome.

"Communities in Oxfordshire and Dorset need to be prepared for the possibility of significant river flooding.”

"We would urge people to be prepared by checking their flood risk, signing up to free flood warnings and keeping an eye on the latest flood updates via the EA website and Twitter."
