having just read this very interesting article i wonder if anyone has any thoughts on the actual amount of land one would need to be self/semi self sufficient? too much and i think it could be too daunting for any couple hoping for the "good life" style, as we are in our fifties we are looking for a place with about 2 acres, but very difficult if we want to stay in the south so we are extending our search to brittany/normandy area where there are still bargains to be had. many thanks for a good website. ronnie

I have just bought 2 acres of land, approx 10 miles away from where I live, it is pasture, and I do not know where to start re tools for digging, fencing, what to grow, whether I can put up a large shed etc
Is there a good guide?

Does anyone know of a smallholding to rent or buy in the derbyshire area. we are looking at about 6/10 acres, for self sufficiency plus we have a couple of horses.

I'm seeking a property in suffolk/norfolk to start a small holding with my young family. We are desparate to escape this rat race! We long for a life in the country, my house in Essex is almost finished being decorated to sell and as soon as it is sold we're gone! We'll need a decent size house and enough land for our small holding! Wish us luck

We have become grandparents for the second time and need to move. We have a 5 acre holding on a hillside just west of Oswstry, Shropshire. It's £360K but we are concerned that it should go to someone who cares. Believe me, this is the good life but family comes first.

Greetings,
There seem to be hundreds of people who want a small area of land say 2/5 acres. Its not a new idea but what about grouping together to buy a farm and splitting it up. I am aware of the problems but they can be overcome.
Have a look at chapter7 abd the Lammas project in Pembrokshire.
Any one interested let me know.
Bill

I've jut started looking for a smallholding and am a bit depressed by how hard it is to find any info. I don't mind waiting for the right place to come up, but there doesn't seem to be much out there at all! Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Anyone know of any estate agents that deal with "house plus land"?

Speaking as a single lady who is keen to be self-sufficient and/or a smallholder, getting together with like-minded people to buy a farm and split it up sounds great to me too!! Property prices in this area are horrendous, just getting a garden seems impossible.

Hi Vivienne, we're looking for something that is as close to this area as we can afford! There's not much - the fens looks like the best bet but that means a horrendous commute for the mr.
(Don't get me wrong - I'm not looking for a "hobby" smallholding - but one of us needs to stay in the rat race for a while or we won't be able to afford to move.)

Hi
I wonder if you or any of your members can help me. I used to live in Somerset just outside East Pennard, but health issues forced me to return to my parents in London. It has however always been my dream, desire and intention to return to the Somerset area, and I would love to live somewhere rural with a very small scale smallholding, enough space for ducks, maybe pigs if possible, and to have large enough veg and fruit gardens to enable me to be as self sufficient at least during much of the year as possible. However due to health issues I am on benefits and so am not in a position to buy a property, and so would like to find a landlord with a small property and land who would be willing to rent to someone who's rent would be paid by the DSS.
Having spent many hours and days searching all sorts of estate agents I have found that the majority do not deal either with clients on housing benefit, or with people seeking somewhere rural with land to rent, only those with large amounts of money to buy. I am therefore trying all other avenues I can think of to try and find this property! I am after a small place really, with 2 bedrooms, and must have central heating and a bath due to health issues (a form of arthritis hence only aiming for a small scale property at this time!!) and enough garden / land space to enable the above mentioned ducks (so water on site such as a stream would be brilliant), large veg garden and space for small orchard and soft fruit areas.
I am realistic enough to know that this is not an easy life by any means, and so I do not envisage a large property in perfect condition with huge amounts of land, but something realistic for myself and maybe a partner in the future. If it was a property and a small amount of land as part of a bigger property/ land owned by another, this would be a possibility. As you can probably tell I am willing to look at all avenues to make this happen! :0)
I hope you don't mind my writing to you like this but I saw the info on your association in the Smallholders Mag (I read it and plan ready for the day it works out! :0)!! ) and thought it was worth writing to you.
Thanks for your time and if you could help me or even point me in the direction of others I could approach that would be great.
Thanks so much
Ms Jo Ryan

Hi Ally,
Just a thought - some time ago (probably 2-3 years now) I contacted Hertfordshire County Council and enquired about renting a smallholding or horticultural unit. I was told there were some units in north Herts. (horticultural I think) but had tenants who were just using the living accommodation (too old to work). I got the impression they rarely came up. I also know a chap who was going to rent a smallholding a few years back, again from the County Council - so they are out there but..... Unfortunately I don't remember who I spoke to and it was a struggle to find the right person.
Like you I am looking at the Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire areas plus possibly Suffolk or Norfolk. I am worried about being isolated, so far from friends and family.
I notice that East Anglian Equestrian properties sometimes have smallholdings listed.

Hi all
I am another person looking for a peace of heaven. We currently have some aminals (pigs/chickens) on a friends farm but are looking to having our own land. We don't have a huge amount of money but have some. We are looking for someone who has some land that they are not using and would like to sell/rent. This will allow us to let animals live as they should. We are true believers in growing rare breeds and would like to produce a completely self suffient life for ourselves and family. No longer do we want mass production and animals to live inside cages or sheds when they should be living free to roam. We don't mind what state the land is in as hard labour is never going to be an issue. We can only hope someone out there will read this message and help us on the way. This land would need to be in Kent and ideally near Maidstone/Ashford.
Thank you for reading
Paula

Greetings,
There seem to be hundreds of people who want a small area of land say 2/5 acres. Its not a new idea but what about grouping together to buy a farm and splitting it up. I am aware of the problems but they can be overcome.
Have a look at chapter7 abd the Lammas project in Pembrokshire.
Any one interested let me know.

Hi everyone. After weeks and weeks of searching for answers, I have found this site and hope someone might be able to help me please.
Last year I bought a small (3/4 acre) field in the middle of nowhere from the proceeds of a motorbike accident claim.
It has been my dream ever since I could remember of owning a bit of England and doing something with it.
As I am a single parent, I never thought my dream could become real - BUT it did!
After I bought the land, I took a small caravan down there for a few days and started clearing the land up and cutting it back (it was overgrown with brambles, nettles etc and up to 5' tall!)
Over the next couple of months, every spare penny I had went on buying things like gardening tools etc and I also bought 100 2' foot conifers to fence down the road side.
I then was offered a STATIC caravan very cheap so paid for delivery after borrowing some money and sited it well away from the road and in the furthest corner possible.
Within a month I had a notice from the council asking me to remove it. Ouch! that hurt!
I have been arguing with them over it since September last year and now (yesterday) have finally had an ENFORCEMENT NOTICE to remove it withing 3 months.
My main problem is that I have just applied for a HOLDING NUMBER to keep goats and have two arriving next weekend.
I was planning on using 1/2 the caravan for shelter for them and using the other 1/2 for personal use.
I really dont know what to do now - I can appeal BUT I have used every penny on the land so far so that isnt really an option.
I have searched everywhere for possible LOOPHOLES or any info I can get on been able to keep the caravan for goat shelter but have found nothing.
I therefore am turning to this site with the hope that someone could help / advise me in any way.
I thank you in advance for any help.

I have loads of mature fruit trees, laden with fruit (plums, pears, apples and cherries) and grow a few vegetables, alongside breeding some lovely dogs and have been here doing 'my own thing' for nearly 7 years. Not sure what you want exactly ( i.e. amount of land) I have two small stables and kennels on about an acre, with a two bed bungalow (so no stairs). I've quite a few apple, pear, plum and cherry trees, there's plenty of space for chickens. It used to be a piggery where there were 75 breeding sows. The piggies have gone but the outbuildings are all still here and quite sound, with power light and water. Its up for rent at £800.00 per month. I must say, with regard to the haunted bit, I was certain a couple of years ago it was, but things have quietened down a bit, nothing too extreme. I've been here nearly 7 years and been happy. Just need something a bit bigger now. 07877973209.

What I mean is, I do not want to spend my capital on rent and must find a way of earning a living - I am a horticulturalist by training and would like to keep chicken and pet or fibre goats. I would have to look into the possibilities.

We would dearly love to have a smallholding but we can't seem to find anything under £300,000. We're pretty flexible as to where we could move to but ideally (and if we ever won the lottery) we'd love to find somewhere in the New Forest area but realise this is just a pipe dream. We're looking for 1-2 acres and probably a restoration project for the house as I think that's the only way we might be able to afford anything. Good luck to everyone in a similar position to us and I hope you can make your smallholding dreams come true.

Hello, I am looking for a small holding in kent, but a small holding where I can contact the owner and try and find a home for my cow. I am a young farmer based at the museum of kent life and want to keep my cow instead of him going off. I would be very greatful if anybody could help me!

I am seeking a small cottage to rent (2 beds or so). I have polymyalgia which prevents me from working full-time so would need to pay rent via Housing Benefit. Not looking for a huge amount of land - just a large garden big enough to grow some plants and veg, keep a few chicks/ducks, plant some fruit. Fairly rural and long-term. I have two medium-sized dogs and would be happy to move anywhere. Can anyone help please? Please email me sue.hallah@btinterne
