Heart research UK say that although the worst of the cold snap seems to be over, there may be more to come, so keep those extra layers handy for keeping warm inside and out. They warn that this time of year can spell gloom for your heart as many people turn to comfort foods such as crisps and chocolate. Comfort foods are often high in calories, sugar and salt, which can be troublesome for your blood pressure and waistline. Banish your winter blues by tucking into some healthy and heart-warming foods.
• Start your day with a steamy bowl of hot porridge with apple and cinnamon to warm you up.
• Pasta is a quick and easy winter warmer which is sure to give you an energy boost. Add some colourful veg to boost your 5-a-day.
• Spicy food will soon give you a warm glow; top your jacket potato with a spicy vegetable and mixed bean chilli or a low-fat chicken curry sauce.
• Dig into beans on wholemeal toast for a fibre boost. If you’re feeling adventurous why not stock up on omega 3 by having soya beans in tomato sauce on your toast instead.
• Gather up all your leftover vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, broccoli and parsnips and make a scrumptious soup.
• Help fight that mid-afternoon chill by having some toast topped with tinned mackerel or sardines in tomato sauce. These delicious oily fish are packed with omega 3 which is good for your heart.
Stay warm this winter by drinking plenty of hot beverages and fill up on some heart-warming delights to keep your heart healthy.
