Apple Festival at the Centre for Alternative Technology
12:00pm Monday 26th September 2011 in Grow Your Own
A weekend full of apple related fun on the 1st and 2nd of October 2011 As the days suddenly shorten and the new school term gets underway it can start to feel like winter, yet at CAT we still have a whole host of exciting Autumnal things to enjoy. In particular, it’s time to get excited about the UK’s most celebrated fruit; the Apple is well and truly in season!
There are over 7,500 varieties of apples world wide- that means you could eat a different apple every day for more than 19 years, and never eat the same kind twice! Unfortunately in the UK we eat almost twice as many apples from abroad.
Alex Randall one of the people organising the Apple Festival at CAT said "Despite the current strong demand for apples, most consumers have very little choice in the varieties of apples they buy and eat compared to previous generations. And those growers who are trying to preserve ancient varieties face an uphill struggle."
Throughout the 2 day festival experts will be on hand to identify varieties of apple, visitors are welcome to bring apples to be identified and juiced. As well as apple experts the festival will be a celebration of local food and drink with a wide range of activities for all the family including talks and tours, pedal powered smoothies, live music, kids activities and talks and tours.
" Apple day is an annual event at CAT and attracts 100's of people from across the local area in a celebration of the humble but delicious fruit - the apple" said Alex Randall
