The snow and ice are thawing today although we have been forecast more cold weather and a possibility of some more snow. But for yesterday and today, there is definitely a slow thaw and I feel as though I am waking from a long sleep. I’ve been looking round the smallholding this morning and my first venture was into the greenhouse. I’ve hardly dared open the door except to refill the greenhouse heater and relight it. Despite a fairly robust greenhouse heater (purchased for £2 from a local car boot), some of the plants do not look that good especially where they have touched the glass. I should have moved everything into the middle. Apart from the Coriander, the other herbs look really well which was my aim for this year – to have fresh herbs for cooking all year round.

Just as I started to write this, there was a sound at the window and a blue tit was hanging on the wood looking in at me and my home office on our smallholding. This always thrills me, being so close to the beauty of nature so I thought I would mention it. There is snow outside and of course the bird feeders are full but it is like looking out on a Christmas card! And Christmas brings feasting as it always has done and food brings food waste so it seems.

WHAT does Christmas mean to you?

We’ve really known its winter this week with gales, rain and of course the ever darkening nights.

I’m often a bit down in January but I am so grateful this at the moment simply not to be ill, having had the dreaded flu twice in a month and also that the weather is warmer, so I am quite content.

Here we are, five days from Christmas and I am even more unprepared than usual. This is because I had flu, yes flu not a cold – even the doctor agreed – and have struggled to get through the average day, let alone have time to do anything at all Christmassy.
