March the first month of the show season

March is the month when the show scene up and down the country starts to get going until, by mid summer, the agricultural, country, and vintage shows are in full swing until October. Compiling the extensive Smallholder Show Diary is always exciting for me as I’ve been to so many of the events that we list that I can picture them as I type and smell that evocative summer scent of crushed grass.

Our New Blog

On my smallholding - New Year - New Year Resolutions!

New Year, new resolutions. I always make some but by the end of the year I can’t always remember what they were! Mostly they centre around organising my time better, spending more time with the ponies and keeping records, all of which, to an extent, I do manage to achieve. Well not perhaps the spending time with the ponies. This year I really do resolve to do this as I have a two year old, er, make that a three year old, who needs some serious work if she is to be the brilliant driving Exmoor that I envisage

The dark days of December

It’s that time of the year when the days are too short to get anything done! At the worst there is about six or so hours of daylight which means looking after animals seems to become the main function of the day. It’s even harder if you are working full time away from home as it’s going to be dark when you leave and dark when you return and only those who have coped with livestock on this basis know how frustrating this can be.

On my smallholding in November
