BIRDERS are being invited to take part in a Dawn Chorus Walk on a farm in Somerset this May (2016).

The event takes place at Lower Clavelshay Farm near Taunton/Bridgwater on Monday, May 2 at 6.30am and is followed by a cooked breakfast using Somerset-sourced ingredients at the Clavelshay Barn Restaurant.

Event organiser and co-owner of the award-winning restaurant, Sue Milverton explained: “This event is great for anyone who wishes to brush up on their birdsong. It’s an early start but definitely worth it especially when also followed by a hearty breakfast.

“Join our bird expert on a walk around the farm to enjoy the wonders of the dawn chorus as the sun starts to rise. We love our birds here and have lots of bird-related artwork in the restaurant too so it’s a wonderful event all round for us.

“The dawn chorus is triggered by a combination of longer days and the breeding season, culminating in this wonderful display of birdsong! Blackcaps and long tailed tits are just a few sounds to enjoy. Followed by a full English breakfast with coffee or tea, this will be one of the most memorable morning experiences you will have.”

Clavelshay Barn Restaurant is an award-winning restaurant within a lovingly restored and converted 18th century stone barn at the foot of the picturesque Quantock Hills at Lower Clavelshay Farm near North Petherton.

It is set on a family-run farm that produces its own milk, beef, pork, lamb and eggs, which all feature in its top quality and tasty dishes.

Sue added: “At Clavelshay we also strive to use as much produce as possible from the farm and the surrounding countryside. We use our own pork, rose veal, wild rabbit, pigeon and pheasant. We have a walled garden where we grow salad leaves, herbs, soft fruit and vegetables. If it is not possible to use our own produce, we only use local suppliers who can provide us with quality local produce which is fully traceable.”

The restaurant’s menu is always based on fresh, seasonal ingredients and all the dishes served are created with love by its experienced and talented Chef Olivier Certain.

The restaurant, which has a Taste of the West Gold Award, is open in the evenings from Wednesday to Saturday with dinner served from 7pm. It is also open for Sunday lunches from 12noon until 2pm.
