Liz Wright's Biography

Liz Wright has edited Smallholder since 1987. She has always been interested in country matters and kept goats and fowl since she was 20. She has a smallholding which she shares with her partner Mick. . A few years ago Liz reluctantly found new homes for the Golden Guernsey Goats at a City Farm in Islington as the household showed a curious reluctance to drink goat's milk, and a Jersey heifer was bought. But as Smallholder Magazine grew it was increasingly more difficult to run too many livestock so Sparkle was found a new home with another Jersey cow in Suffolk. Luckily there is now the opportunity to purchase organic milk at local supermarkets so there is no plan to replace the dairy animals. The sheep too were rehomed at this time but Liz did enjoy the lambing side and managed 200% percentages for several years.

During the last few years, Liz has raised a sow and had several litters of piglets and produced free range turkeys for the Christmas market. The garden too has been productive with potatoes and salads and is being extended year by year. Liz is very keen on ponies and still keeps a number of Exmoors including a stallion, now 22 years of age. She also has Welsh Cobs and a donkey. Mick is very keen on working vintage tractors and is the proud owner of a Fergie and an International and enjoys match ploughing. More importantly, Liz thinks, is the 600 bales of hay he made last year with his tractor and second hand baler.

These days as well as the ponies, Liz concentrates on poultry and keeps a small flock of hybrid laying hens (the girls) and a number of pure breeds including Japanese Bantams, Belgian Mille Fleur, Silkies and Jersey Giants. She also keeps ducks and her favourite is a Rouen type elderly brown duck, imaginatively called ‘Duckle’ She has a small village egg round. Recently Liz added bees to the holding and with the help of her mentor, Chris, has produced honey for sale and for home use in the last few years.

Liz feels that smallholding is a way of life and feels privileged to live in the rural Cambridgeshire Fens and experience the lifestyle she has longed for since she was a child.

Liz was careful to learn as much as she could about each type of animal before keeping them and did numerous courses with sheep including a lambing course which helped a lot. She is a Ponies UK Panel Judge and an NVQ Assessor to Level 3 for horse care and also helps the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth on a volountary basis by looking at donkeys in her area. She is very keen on looking after existing bridleways, and is Chair of theParish Council. She feels strongly about the value of the village community and enjoys singing in the local dramatic group as music is one of her passions.

SMALLHOLDER Advertising Manager is Wendy Symons. Wendy is 37 and has a strong agricultural background which goes back several generations. Being a farmer's daughter and brought up on a mixed farm in Wadebridge, North Cornwall, (beef, sheep and dairy) has given her a deep understanding of the countryside and farming today. Before joining SMALLHOLDER she spent fifteen years working with agricultural retailers where she met all kinds of farmers and smallholders and has come to understand the challenges that they face.

She then worked on the South West Farmer newspaper which she enjoyed but felt that she wanted to know more about the specialist areas. She is particularly interested in the commitment that smallholders give to their business and the increasing role that they are playing in the maintenance of all that is important in our beautiful countryside.

On a practical level she has had to raise orphan lambs and calves as part of her farming background but she has a knowledge of many other areas of smallholding. She says that the smallholding family seems to include all the animals as well!

A keen fan of the Royal Cornwall Show she is constantly amazed at the tremendous dedication of smallholders whether it be poultry, rabbits, bees or honey. She believes no one could ever doubt that smallholders have a vital role in making these events so enjoyable for all those visiting the specialist tents. In the future she would like to learn more about organic produce because with approximately 70% still being imported she feels there must be some opportunity for the smallholder in supplying such produce. She is very much looking forward to meeting readers and learning about their smallholdings, and particularly to speaking to advertisers about how she can best serve their business needs.
