Bees have suffered from poor weather in early summer

RBI Keith Morgan has warned that fellow bee inspectors have observed bees in some cases on the verge of starvation earlier on this year. This was because during the cold, wet, unspringlike weather it was very easy to place hives onto a crop of oilseed rape and think that they will be able to fend for themselves, but they need to be able to fly each day .The hot spell in March allowed the bees to expand rabidly and the a large brood nests then needed food that the foraging bees could not fly out to obtain. It’s worth taking note of this situation in case it occurs again. Bee keepers were advised to feed with fondant or if they have a large colony regular sugar syrup or ambrosia.
Keith Morgan also warned that Varroa mite was been seen and advised bee keepers to check out beebase website. www.nationalbeeunit.com
