WITH the media coverage in poultry welfare over the last few months there has been an extraordinary amount of interest from the public with regards to the keeping and rearing of chickens - for their own use and also supplying products to the public on a small scale. This is an excellent idea but there are rules and regulations that have to be considered plus the breeds to use and equipment you will require.

THERE is one major problem in poultry which is very serious but always seems to be neglected or not spoken of and this is a problem mite infestation. Unless you have actually experienced the havoc and devastation it causes, it is very hard to understand how devastating its effect actually is upon poultry.

The rodent - public enemy No 1

RATS and mice have always been the plague of all animal keepers as livestock seems to bring the inevitable pests which appear out of nowhere and can cause untold damage to both buildings and livestock. It is also generally believed that rats in particular are on the increase.

Layers spring into action

WINTER time is now hopefully on its way out and we are looking forward to spring and a productive new year is always on our minds. During the winter egg production drops quite rapidly due to the shorter days, the moult and the general temperature. What we all need now, including the hens, is a boost to get us back on track.

Incubation

The subject of incubation is never ending. Many people look at incubators wondering whether they are capable of hatching their eggs in an artificial way. These machines are not as complicated as it may seem, but what I must stress is that any machine, whether it is a computer or an incubator, is only as good as the person who is operating that unit.
